What is Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a laser eye surgery performed to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. In this surgery, the cornea, which is the transparent layer at the front of the eye, is reshaped with a special laser in a precise manner. This ensures that light reaches the retina properly, improving visual acuity.

Compared to traditional eye surgery methods, Lasik offers many advantages. The surgery is performed without using a blade, minimizing trauma to the cornea. The procedure is quite fast and painless, and patients can usually return home the same day. Additionally, the recovery period is short, and patients typically regain normal vision within a few days.

How is Lasik Eye Surgery Performed?

Lasik eye surgery is performed in two stages:

1. Creation of Corneal Flap: In the first stage, a thin layer of the cornea is lifted using a device called a microkeratome or femtosecond laser. While a microkeratome uses a mechanical blade, the femtosecond laser creates the corneal flap using a series of ultra-short laser pulses. The femtosecond laser is considered a more precise and safe method.

2. Reshaping of the Cornea: In the second stage, the shape of the cornea is reshaped precisely according to the patient's refractive error using a laser called an excimer laser. The excimer laser ablates the corneal tissue at a microscopic level to achieve the desired shape. This process takes about 15-30 minutes for each eye.

Who is Suitable for Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik eye surgery can be performed on individuals aged 18 and above who do not have eye disease or systemic illness and experience discomfort due to the use of glasses or contact lenses. Before the surgery, a detailed eye examination is performed to evaluate factors such as corneal thickness, tear production, and the degree of refractive error. Based on these evaluations, it is determined whether the patient is a suitable candidate.

Suitable candidates for the surgery:

  • Being 18 years of age or older
  • No eye disease or systemic illness
  • Experiencing discomfort due to the use of glasses or contact lenses
  • Adequate corneal thickness
  • Stable refractive error (not changing in the last 1 year)
  • Adequate tear production
  • Having realistic expectations

What are the Advantages of Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik eye surgery has many advantages. Some of these are:

  • It is a quick and painless procedure.
  • It provides a rapid increase in visual acuity.
  • It eliminates dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
  • It significantly improves quality of life.
  • It does not involve traumatic intervention in the eye.
  • The risk of complications is low.
  • It provides more freedom in daily life activities such as sports and outdoor activities.
  • It makes you feel more confident in social and work life.

How Does the Lasik Eye Surgery Process Work in Bursa?

Prior to Lasik eye surgery, the patient undergoes a detailed eye examination and some tests. These tests include measurement of eye pressure, biomicroscopy, retinography, corneal topography, and tear test. Contact lens use should be discontinued for 1 week before the surgery. On the day of the surgery, local anesthesia is applied to the patient. The surgery takes about 15-30 minutes for each eye. Patients can return home the same day.

Recovery Process After Lasik Eye Surgery

The recovery process after Lasik eye surgery is generally fast and painless. Most patients experience significant improvement in their vision a few hours after the surgery. Achieving full visual acuity usually takes place within a few weeks. Temporary discomforts such as burning, itching, tearing, and light sensitivity may be experienced in the first 24 hours after the surgery. It is important to use the eye drops prescribed by your doctor regularly to relieve these discomforts and to avoid rubbing or rubbing your eyes harshly. Your vision may be blurry or wavy in the first week, but this is normal and will improve over time. During this period, you should avoid straining your eyes and looking at screens for long periods, and you should protect your eyes from sunlight by using sunglasses. Your vision will continue to improve over the first month, and it is important to have regular eye check-ups. Achieving full visual acuity usually takes between 3 to 6 months, and this period may vary from person to person. You can return to your normal daily activities after full recovery.

Things to Consider After Lasik Eye Surgery

Avoid rubbing or rubbing your eyes and avoid wearing makeup or smoking. Protect your eyes from sunlight by using sunglasses and use the medications prescribed by your doctor regularly. Also, you should have regular eye check-ups and avoid heavy physical activities and water sports. If you notice any problems such as redness, swelling, pain, or vision disturbances in your eyes, you should inform your doctor.

Is Lasik Eye Surgery a Permanent Solution?

Lasik eye surgery is a permanent solution for correcting refractive errors. In most patients, visual acuity remains stable for years. However, there may be some changes in vision due to aging. Additionally, in some cases, repeat surgeries may be required.
